The writing room
A real page with a quiet toolbar, and your scene’s card, notes, readers’ comments, story bible and research in the margin. The room has four modes, Write, Plan, Review and Publish, so you move between drafting, outlining, reading notes and exporting without losing your place.
Plan with index cards
Plan shows every scene as an index card with its status ribbon, so you can shuffle the story before you commit, or as rows when you'd rather see an outline.
A story bible
Characters, locations and items with their own notes and tags, in the margin beside the page while you write. Research sits in the next tab.
Snapshots
Take a snapshot of a scene before a big revision and go back to it whenever you like, so no draft is ever lost.
Focus when you need it
Focus mode, typewriter scrolling, a spotlight that dims everything but the sentence you're on, and linguistic focus to pick out nouns, verbs or adjectives.
Find anything
Search the whole project, manuscript, notes and story bible at once. ⌘K (Ctrl+K) jumps to any scene by name or does anything by name, from a sprint to an export.
Start the way your project starts
A new project asks what you’re working on and lays out the binder to match: a novel, short stories, essays or memoir, a screenplay, poems, a blank page. You can reshape it later.
Already have a draft? Bring in a Scrivener 2 or 3 project with its binder, synopses, notes and labels, or a Word document (.docx). Projects can also be downloaded as a .quill backup whenever you like, and opened again later.
A room you want to come back to
Six built-in themes for day and night, weather that moves on the desk around your page, and sounds you switch on when you want them: rain, a crackling fire, wind, crickets, and typewriter, mechanical or pencil keys. Sounds never play until you choose them. Atkinson Hyperlegible is a switch away for anyone who reads more easily with it.
The Campfire companion sits beside your page, flares when you save and grows as you keep writing day after day. The Stationer has more places to write in, each with its own theme, companion, weather, sounds and page font, for ink you earn by writing.
Writers around you
Add the friends you already write with by their handle, or meet writers in groups. Groups gather around a genre or a habit, with threads, critique exchanges, beta reader requests, group sprints and weekly threads. Every writer starts in the Writers’ Room.
