Coming from Scrivener
A free Scrivener alternative that runs in your browser.
Scrivener is a much-loved desktop app for long writing projects. If you like how it works but want to write from any computer, keep the book in your account, and have friends read along, Ascrivia was made for that. It’s free, and it opens your Scrivener projects.
Bring your Scrivener project with you
Ascrivia imports Scrivener 3 and Scrivener 2 projects, zipped or as a folder:
- 1Make a free Ascrivia account and open Your Projects.
- 2Choose Import, then A Scrivener project (.zip). On a Mac, compress the .scriv first: right-click it in Finder and choose Compress. On Windows, where a .scriv is a folder, choose A Scrivener project folder instead.
- 3Ascrivia brings in the binder, the text and its formatting, synopses, notes, status and labels. The manuscript stays the manuscript; other folders become notes and research.
Research files like PDFs, images and web pages stay in Scrivener; Ascrivia tells you how many. You can add PDFs, images and text files to a project’s research in Ascrivia afterward.
What will feel familiar
The parts of Scrivener writers lean on most have a place in Ascrivia:
Index cards
Snapshots
Compile
Targets
Focus tools
What’s different
- It runs in your browser. Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on a Mac, a Windows PC or a Chromebook, with a compact layout for phones and tablets. Nothing to install, and nothing to sync: projects save to your account as you write.
- Friends read along. Share a draft with the friends you choose, who leave notes and reactions on the line. More on beta readers.
- You can write together. A co-writer can write in the same project at the same time. More on co-writing.
- Other writers are close by. Groups, sprints and challenges, if you want company.
- It’s free. No card and no trial.
When Scrivener is still the better fit
Scrivener has had many years to grow, and it goes deeper in places. Its compile settings offer far more control over a finished file, it has screenwriting formats, and it works fully offline. Ascrivia keeps unsaved changes in your browser if the connection drops and saves them once it’s back, but it’s made to be used online.
You don’t have to choose forever. Export from Ascrivia to Word (.docx) whenever you like, and Scrivener can import it.
